Cuisine: Pizzeria with Italian Dinners

Situated on McClean Avenue in between Sand Lane and Father Cappadano right off the Verrazano Bridge is a small pizzeria J&R.   J and R caters mostly to Take out and Delivery orders but also offers a few tables for those that would like to sit down and relax. This pizzeria has a display with many favorite specialty slices, Ricotta, Grandma Slices, Rolls, Spinach Rolls and Chicken rolls can be seen the photos on the menu page.  The restaurant pizzeria offers daily soups, wraps, dinners and many coupon specials located on the main website.

There are many rants about this establishment from a local high school and user reviews can be seen through the directory, locals and locals from other neighborhoods have been driving out of there way to pick up a pie from J&R.  Does it surpass the average pizza joint? That’s for you to decide, but this neighborhood pizza has became sort of a landmark by the unique building it is located in.  Enjoy and don’t forget to write some user reviews to let everyone know your taste buds of them.

Cafe Vorrei Grand Opening

Another Fine Italian Cuisine opening and replacing another restaurant on Staten Island.  Yesterday we posted about Cafe Luna replacing Panarea and here we are with news of another Grand Opening on Staten Island.  Cafe Vorrei, The Proprietorship of this new restaurants are Andrew Esposito and Alberto Hoyos.

The restaurant has received a huge up-lift from the previous Grasmere Grill, especially on the outside which now features a beautiful Water Fountain in the over-sized lot surrounded by pumpkin decorations and other flowers.  (My opinion: This is a great spot to use for outdoor dining during the summer if they can add some shade). The interior remained in similar position as the previous restaurant, including the bar at the entrance.

The Walk-Around:

  • Outside: Very nice outfit to the restaurant with possibility to add some tables to the outside. Clean waterfall situated in the center to give a very nice presentation and looks inviting.
  • The Bar:  The first place you pass is the Bar which offers (Dine at Bar) and features about 7 chairs to either wait for a table, relax for a bit or even enjoy lunch.
  • Dining room:  A fireplace in the center wall to add a romantic feel, thoughtful wall decorations.  The right side offers 4 dining tables, 1 Large round and 3 squares.  Looking towards the left displays more tables which are looking outside.    Basic, simple and neat dining room overall which looks very similar to the previous restaurant.

The “Panarea” restaurant replacement is here, Cafe Luna is a Fine Italian Cuisine offering a straight forward neat dining atmosphere, beautifully designed bar and outdoor dining.
The recent redesign and uplift of the restaurant brings us a clean, crisp feel to the South Shore.  This restaurant has a ultra modern overall ambiance.

The Walk-Around:

  • The Outside:A fully re-designed exterior (from the old burgundy style panarea) makes this restaurant look crisp.
Note: At the time of publishing this article the outside is not fully “Furniturized”.  But the manager has told us that the outside will be covered for the winter (similar to Panarea) and opened for the summer.
  • The Bar: The atmosphere upon entrance is very impressive, a full clean look with modern style lighting makes dining or waiting at the bar a wonderful choice.  Lounge couch is situated across from the bar with two small tables.
  • Dining Room: A large single Dining Room features a fireplace in the back center of the restaurant.  Many round dining tables situated on the inner side of the restaurant while leaving room for smaller parties to dine on the side.

Authentic Italian Food and Pizza from Brooklyn.  Pat Maniglia’s has won a positive write up from the local newspaper (Staten Island Advance) in October.
They have been established in about June 2009.  There is a single table capacity in the restaurant, so this is more of a local take-out delivery joint which may very well attract people all over the Island to try.  The single slice I have tried literally brought back fond memories from growing up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn.

Pat Maniglia’s Restaurant has had a write-up by the local news paper: The Staten Island Advance.
The article below is written by Jamie Lee on October 8, 2009.

Pat Maniglia’s

WEST BRIGHTON – A little slice of heaven is being served in West Brighton.

And it came direct from Brooklyn.

Pat Maniglia’s Pizzeria, a longtime restaurant staple in Bensonhurst, started churning out pies in a snug storefront on the corner of Clove Road and Delafield Avenue last March.

Although Staten Island has its share of top-notch pizzerias, patrons couldn’t be happier about the new addition to the borough’s pizza landscape.

“I love to see people smile after eating my food,” said Stapleton resident Mario Maniglia, owner of the shop that bears his father’s name. “Like anyone, I love it when people compliment the food, but it’s more so that I just like to see them happy.”

This is a strict take-out or delivery location – there are no tables inside, just a glass countertop – but customers often stand around just to shoot the breeze with Maniglia while enjoying a slice of one of his specialty pies.

“That’s just how it is here,” said Maniglia, who has already begun teaching his two sons, Mario Jr., 24, and Paulie, 20, the ropes. “And I think it’s important for us to really become part of the community and get to know the customers.”

It doesn’t hurt that his product is high quality.

Maniglia’s father opened his first pizzeria in 1968, and the lad found himself rolling dough when he was just 2 years old.

As a boy, he learned the value of fresh ingredients and was privy to the secret recipes of his father, which helped him bake perfect thin-crust pies.

The sauce recipe remains classified, but Maniglia did give out the pesto ingredients used in making his delicious “Grandma Pie.”

“I don’t use any pine nuts at all,” he said. “Just fresh basil, 100 percent virgin olive oil and seasonings.”

And if pesto isn’t appealing, there are countless other varieties to try, ranging from regular-topped pies to baked ziti and buffalo chicken-topped creations.

“Personally, I love the white pie,” said St. George resident Gina Morrison. “That’s definitely my favorite.”

Pat Maniglia’s Pizzeria, located at 731 Delafield Ave., West Brighton, is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Call 718-448-4500 or visit www.patmaniglias.com.
