So here is one of the busiest restaurant ‘Take-Out’ days of the year and many local restaurants have specials to sway you to become their customers.  You may have seen ads all over the place, magazines, newspaper, commercials and fliers with different kind of “GIANT DEALS”.

We have pizzeria’s like Brooklyn’s Finest offering different type of “Start” to “Finish” and “Mid Time” deals which include wings and things.   You can enjoy watching the game at DaddyO’s BBQ and Sports Bar, with many T.V’s, ribs and the rest of BBQ may just make this game day a perfect celebration at the recently opened location.  Many other local Pizza places offer various deals, package usually includes pizza specials with wings, garlic knots enough to feed anywhere from 5 to 40 people.

This year WhereYouEat makes it convenient to order food, with a new “Online Ordering” feature, adding items to your cart is as simple as Point, Click, Select, Check-out.  This year the following restaurants let you order online: A and M Pizzeria on Castleton Avenue, Famous Falafel in Great Kills,  John’s Pizzeria in Grant City, Manor Sushi located on Manor Road serving quality sushi with a large delivery radius, New Sing Bo which is one of Staten Island’s only authentic Chinese style restaurants which is not “Americinized”, Nori Sushi on New Dorp Plaza, Restaurant on The Plaza which has been around for many years and serves one of Staten Islands favorite Pizza, Roma Delight serving thin crust located in Great Kills, Valiano Pizza serving mid-island, Zio Nino Pizzeria serving the North Shore.  You can click to see the list of all restaurants offering Online Ordering.

Most of the restaurants that offer online ordering through whereyoueat have a 10% off special discount which you can take advantage on this day.   Either way, whatever the case may be, you can still use to find Bars, Restaurants on the island even if a special is not offered, they most likely have some sort of special during the game.  Most important is to share your experience on their restaurant page by clicking ‘Write a Review’,  it’s the best way to help grow the WhereYouEat.com ‘Staten Island’ community.

Hints on using whereyoueat to find where to eat:  1) Select Establishment Type:  ’Bars w/Grill, 2) select Features: ‘Restaurant & Bar’.  3) Always narrow to Wait Staff dine in, and remember to always support the highlighted restaurants at the top as that’s what keeps whereyoueat going.

Tis the season for New Openings

Three years of following the local restaurant scene, adding new restaurants, September and October seem to be the busiest month of Grand Openings, it’s like a pre-holiday gift to the locals and every year we see new ideas come into play.  What makes this month so special is the variety of restaurants expanding to different parts of the island, offering their tastes to further parts than ever before.

Last month we have watched Z-Two make a grand opening on the South Shore with a complete statement of luxurious, club-like, trendy yet stylish Diner and Lounge, a very unique concept of what the owner Steve new that locals needed.  We have watched Pronto Pizza expand to their fifth location which now finally let’s them serve the South Shore, giving option of Pronto’s Pizza and Pasta to every resident on Staten Island.

South Shore business has been expanding like wild-fire, business after business seem to be growing day by day.  Just this week we announced a grand opening for a new concept, a Smokehouse with an Authentic “PIT”, serving Ribs, Smoked Sausage and more of the favorites which could rarely be found on Staten Island before.  DaddyO’s BBQ and Smokehouse is now open for business, located at the previous location of Hoof n Finz.

We have an upscale Mexican Cuisine that had it’s ‘Soft Opening’ early this week, Cabo, which will be announcing a Grand Opening sometime next week, after they work out their kinks and get their take-out menu right, although their main focus is dine in, it is a restaurant and bar located on page avenue.

Next week we will also be announcing a new opening of a restaurant replacing Vola Cafe, The DaNoi family will be brining Il Diveo to Hylan Blvd.  And whatever happened to the All You Can Eat buffet that was advertising as being opened about 2 months ago, but unfortunately never made it to opening their doors, maybe this month we’ll see something good.

Some other openings coming soon to the island:  Tottenville Tavern, which will take the place of Tuscan Sun, Red 7 will replace the Pizzeria and Bar on Arthur kill Road.   Not sure of the exact openings, but it’s what we noticed while going for our monthly stroll around the island to screen what’s changed.

WhereYouEat.com is Staten Island’s most comprehensive dining guide and restaurant portal.  We provide a complete listing with all menus, photos and information of every local restaurant in our borough.  Best way to continue to support us is to support restaurants that sponsor us, look for highlighted restaurants in any search and make sure to mention you found them through WhereYouEat.  Before I forget, remember to write your reviews after dining out at any of these new restaurants, other visitors are waiting for your opinions.

The West Shore Inn is like a landmark to the north shore, this cozy neighborhood bar serves very good food, steaks, chops, burgers in a pleasant atmosphere.  Locals love to visit this place for after work, dinner with the family, lunch at any day or even that quite evening.  The food was always impressive and has always received great ratings from across the web including WhereYouEat visitors.

The news is West Shore is under new ownership for the past few months and began offering delivery, after many requests the owners had no choice but to include that in their options.

Now you can have good quality food, Authentic American Cuisine where Sauces and Gravies are homemade, steaks are dry aged on premises delivered to your house.

Krispy Pizza who won the Battle of the Borough pizza challenge held at the New York Pizza Expo.  Famous for making Grandma’s Pizza and Palermo Pizza has opened up it’s third location on Staten Island at the previous location of Pazza Pizza, right next to Tack’s, the local famous Chinese take-out restaurant.

Check out the menu of Krispy Pizza here

Another grand opening was the Island Coffee Shop,  we have been getting requests to find out when the owner, George, would be opening after he lost the lease on his old location on Victory Blvd (Just around the block), which has since became Victory Coffee Shop.

Island Coffee Shop on Manor Road

Preview of the next two weeks:  We expect the following restaurants to open -

Coming soon to the North Shore is a Hibachi Buffet and Grill place located in the Forest Shopping plaza behind KFC.  This used to be a buffet 3 owners straight and has kept going under do to various issues.  Hopefully this restaurant can offer something good for our taste-buds.  The restaurant is planned to be opening early next month, people are working to complete finale renovations, we’ll check it out and announce when they open as soon as they do.

Hoof n Finz has never worked out, Maybe Daddy O’s a BBQ Smoke joint and Sports Bar will offer a better selection and promotion for their business.  This restaurant is also in renovation phase and planned to be opening sometime early next month.

Two Grand Openings: 10301

We have two new (recently new?) restaurants opened in the St George Section of Staten Island.

A Chinese Restaurant and Buffet called Spring, serving all you can eat buffet for $7.95.  The place is kind of small with a small selection, especially for a buffet.  A place that specializes in Buffet such as ‘King Buffet’ where the traffic is larger creates more fresher food.  The selection is small, hopefully the traffic keeps up so they can continue to make fresh food.

Check out the menu for Spring Chinese Restaurant

Another grand opening, right across the street is a restaurant named Bronkito, Pizzeria and Mexican cuisine all in one which is open late and offers delivery to the neighborhood. We are all used to seeing Pizzeria’s with Italian Kitchen, it’s what makes Bronkito unique by serving Authentic Mexican cuisine with your favorite Mexican Sandwiches, Tortas and Tacos.  Where else can you have tacos when ordering your pizza?  Is it good?  Check out user ratings and the menu:  Bronkito Restaurant Staten Island

Brick Oven Pizza Staten Island

Staten Island and Pizza, it makes people go crazy, you agree?  When we sampled out the topic and post ‘Favorite Pizza on Staten Island’ on a main facebook page, guess what happens?  Everyone gets involved to plug in their favorite local pizzeria.

What happens when there is a little twist, and we search for Staten Island’s favorite Wood Burning Brick Oven Pizza?  Only a few main contenders can involved, only a few pizzeria’s across the borough use wood to cook the pizza and the taste is great.

We’ll focus this article on a neighborhood classic, located in Rosebank section we have Tony’s Brick Oven pizza which seems to be loved by many, after a post of the similar question on the main facebook pages, Tony’s came up the most times out of any other pizzeria on the island.

So our team went to check out what’s good at this eatery and we were very surprised on what we found.

The atmosphere was very casual and friendly, easy place to stop in and sit down for a relaxing lunch or dinner.  Tony’s serves beer and wine as well as provides some table service.  The menu and awning states that Tony’s is a Pizzeria, Trattoria Italiana with Mouth watering Italian Specialties.  Overflowing Hot & Cold Sandwiches.  Delicious Calzones & Rolls.

The counter displays many delicious specialty slices which you can tell are just fresh out of the oven, some places just make it look so good and this neighborhood pizzeria sure is one of them.

The Brick Oven Pizza is right on the menu and prices are slightly higher than when it’s cooked in a regular oven, reason is bundles of wood cost more than gas, but the taste is well worth it.  Have you ever barbecued your burger at your camp site?  Tasted the difference, well it’s the same for pizza, it just cooks better, tastes better and even sounds better.

Margherita, Quattro Stagioni, Capricciosa, Puttanesca, Vodka Sauce, White Pie, Contadina, Clams, Personal Pie, La Folle, Primavera is all served from the wood burning brick oven.   A personal pie which is 4 slices at $10.50 is a tipping point of price, but it’s worth it, every bite.

Tony’s Brick Oven also serves regular pizza, Stuffed Pies, Pizza Pan Pies, Baked Dinners, Stromboli’s and Calzones.  A Huge collection of Hot Sandwiches fills up the menu with items like Veal, Sofia, Chicken Cutlet, Cheesesteak Sandwich, Peppers & Eggs.  The Cold Sandwiches feature items like the Italian Combo.  Appetizers & Salads, Pastas, Seafood Specialty menus, Entrees like the Chicken Adriatico which is served with Ziti, Linguine or Penne or substitute pasta for a side of veggies.

Locals also love their Outside-Off-Premise Catering, Which gives you a choice of 4 items plus bread for $13.95 a person.  Items that you choose from are Eggplant Parmigiana, Ham and Pineapple, Mini Rice Balls, Stuffed Shells, Veal and Peppers, Mussels, Calamari and more.

Another fascinating item we discovered on their menu was the “Over-Stuffed!” Delicious Cold Platters & Heros, available as 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Foot!  Remember your one day notice as it takes time to prepare this type of food.

And before we take you to the menu, this is the message from Tony’s All Items are Made Fresh to Order.  Delivery time is usually 30 to 45 minutes.  Please be patient, we will provide our superior service to every customer.  WE appreciate your patronage and look forward to pleasing you.

Sponsored Staten Island Pizza Tour

A Sponsored Pizza Tour.  Many Pizzeria’s on Staten Island, Which one’s should you try?

Let’s get to the Tour (Note: only sponsors are included in this tour, you can click links of their name to enter their restaurant page with Menus & Photos & User Reviews, Enjoy)

There are many great pizzeria’s around the borough, you can almost say it’s non-stop pizza parlors every single shopping plaza and commons center of Staten Island and we will agree most are great, serving decent slices of pizza, offering quick bites to full family dinners for great prices.  Most Pizzeria’s provide convenient and free delivery service with very small minimums, especially during day time hours,  getting a pie, slice or a chicken roll is never a problem, finding the good ones sometimes is.

On the South Shore we have Fratelli Pizzeria which offers Family Style dining in their new eat-in dining room with wait staff table service, Fratelli offers great specials each night of the week, they vary from Pasta Nights to Kids Eat Free, Traditional Lunch Specials.  This restaurant is known for being the neighborhood go-to for family dining and has also been reviewed by the Staten Island Advance which was famed for being “Staten Island’s Newest Hot-spot”

On the other side we look at My Family Pizza on the North Shore of Staten Island, everyone already loved My Pizza for always having fresh Specialty Slices, when they opened up on Castleton Avenue, there was no doubt that this well established community would love this place.  Another nearby pizzeria from nearby locations is NY’s Best Pizza (New York’s Best Pizza), the pride that went into the place and quality of the ingredients has impressed us from the start, non to forget about the cars that they had specially made to represent the pizzeria with large pizza’s flying in the sky, it’s impossible to miss when they are delivering to your neighbors.

An important new style of Pizza’s came to Staten Island during the past two years, Authentic Recipe Sicilian Style Pizza, the other side of North Shore we have Original Sicilian Pizza in which when you try a slice you are guaranteed to love it and also remember to try their spumoni while you relax outside with their outdoor tables.  On Richmond Avenue we have Sharkey’s Square with a similar concept of being established and loved by visitors for their Square Slice, in addition they serve Uncle Louie G’s Authentic Ices.

Looking at the Lower Part of Staten Island, we have some great Pizza Selections around here, entering Staten Island you have a choice of Paul’s Pizza and Pasta located right next to Sand Lane.  When you enter, you will be impressed by the various number of specialty slices they serve, always looking neat and well prepared, but the taste and the quality of ingredients, you’ll grow fond of Paul’s and become a regular patron, especially if you are in the neighborhood.  Driving further down Hylan, towards the South we are welcomed by Brooklyn’s Finest, a recently opened pizzeria which has famed items from Brooklyn which you can very rarely find in the average Pizzeria, Have you tried the Panelle Special, sandwiches are named of Brooklyn Neighborhoods, to give it that particular ‘Brooklyn-Feel’, The Mill Basin, Cobble Hill, Park Slope are all found on the menu under sandwiches.

We also can’t forget about the just opened Grandma’s Pizza on Bay Street also promising to use great quality ingredients and offer a specialty Grandma slice which is supposed to be really good, but of course we’ll wait to hear your opinions before we rush to judgement.

On Staten Island we also lucky to have Pronto Pizza, which has become a Staple and is mentioned in every questionnaire that we have ever asked on Facebook or other Social Media. They are known for having one of the best (if not the best) Pan Pizza’s and Buffalo Chicken Slices on Staten Island.  You can look at many videos produced of their Pizza Makers spinning pie’s, their large selection of specialty also can’t be overlooked, Pronto Pizza offers convenient online ordering and even gives our visitors 15% off when they use the coupon code ‘WhereYouEat’ at Checkout.  Here is a list of all Pronto Pizza’s on Staten Island.

So now you know, that no matter how many pizza places on the Island, we only offer to promote the best around each neighborhood.

To be accepted into the Pizza Review Tour on Staten Island please read the following statement.
Let’s check out our rules and how we make sure these places would be satisfying to our visitors, because after all, that is most important to satisfy our visitors more than any kind of quick buck.  Restaurants as well as Pizzeria’s are only accepted if they have over 75% votes and no less than 3 Star Rating total, of course this does not apply to New Restaurants, which is why we only allow for a certain term sign up to see how our visitors react, if you like them, we keep them, if you strongly feel negative about that establishment, they are gone.

Three New Pizzeria’s Opened on Staten Island

During the past 2 weeks Staten Island has experienced a growth in Three New Pizza Restaurants.
Lately South Shore has been a growing development of the Island, everything that’s new seems to be coming to the South Shore, recently Z-Two has had their soft-opening after franchise Cheeburger-Cheeburger, Buddha Lounge all made their mark.

So on to the Pizzeria’s, we have Cousin’s Pizza which recently opened on Arthur Kill Road followed by a grand opening of Bario’s Pizza and Pasta ‘Brick Oven, their second location on Staten Island, first being on Nome Avenue and finally which we wrote about earlier Grandma’s Pizza on Bay Street has just had their grand opening (or re-opening).

What else is coming soon to the South Shore?  Pronto Pizza, the quality that you know and like, the service that you always loved will be opening a new location sometime next month.
So please tell us what’s the deal with the South Shore? The past 3 years it has seen a boom in business, restaurants and more.

Chinese Restaurants on Staten Island: A Variety or Similarity?

July 25, 2011 by
Filed under Restaurant News, Staten Island

When I first started my venture working with WhereYouEat, I had a predetermined conclusion in min;, most Chinese Restaurants serve the same or very similar items,   You have your similar lunch specials, appetizers such as Egg-Rolls, Lo Mein, Rice, Dumplings and all the other standard food that we believe makes up a Chinese Restaurant.    At one point I was even questioning why should we put up local restaurant menus for Chinese Places if everything is so similar.

My discovery which has since starting, turned upside down as well as continues with every new restaurant we look deep into.
While many are very similar in their offerings, My conclusion now is that only about 20% are similar, although still very rarely on the same.

So what makes Chinese Restaurants and Take-Out places so different from one another?
My first discovery started with Asparagus, which I never knew could be found on a Chinese Restaurant Menu until looking through menus.   Some restaurants offer the Chicken & Asparagus, Shrimp & Asparagus and other various servings of the vegetable.   Some server skinny noodles, some offer various type of noodles for different type of soup specialties.  We will list all the different and variously unique Chinese Food found across Staten Island menus which make each of these restaurant ‘Unique’ in their own style and taste.

Before we get into that let’s take a look at various cooking styles.
The majority we see on the average take-out place is Hunan, Szechuan  and Cantonese.  These three styles are seen across at least 30% of all restaurants serving Chinese Take-out. Hunan is known for using Chili Peppers, Shallots and Garlic, it is mostly known for being dry hot, spicy food.  Szechuan is known being stir-fried, steamed or braised, it is often cooked until chewy.  Items such as the Kung Pao Chicken or Twice Cooked Pork lives up to the spicy standards of Sichuan or Szechuan Cuisine.  The flavors of the dish are supposed to be well balanced and not greasy, spices are used in moderate amounts to not overwhelm the natural flavors and ingredients.  The major ingredients are onion, sugar, salt, soy sauce, cornstarch and vinegar. Therefore the Cantonese Cuisine is one of the least spicy, lo mein, mei fun and other rice noodles.

Other regional cuisine include Hong Kong, Fujian, Zejiang, Anhui and Xingjiang, all cooked with different various styles.  The majority foods are Rice, Noodles, Soybeans, Wheat, Vegetables, Herbs, Seasonings with different types of meats.  Tea is authentic part of Chinese Cuisines for beverage which is why many local Staten Island Restaurants provide a few tea bags with every order.

So across the island we have many of these cooking styles, ingredients and twists.
From the south shore we have a few standard take-out places, which don’t specify which cooking style they use, an example when you look at Chen’s Garden on Arthur Kill Road.  Although they do specify they only use “White Meat Chicken”.  You should always be able to contact them and ask which cooking style they use.  A few Chinese Restaurants on Staten Island are setup as “All You Can Eat Buffet”, offering you to pay a single price while letting you select from a various of different Chinese Food Items, Staten Island only has two larger more popular restaurant known as King Buffet on Richmond Avenue and China Buffet on Hylan Blvd in the Hylan Shopping Center.   Cheng’s on Forest Avenue is a great example of Hunan, Szechuan and Cantonese cooking styles as well as many others such as China King, China Taste and about 30% of all other restaurants.

Some local Chinese places decide to give a little feel of Japanese and incorporate the two together, Sushi and Standardized Chinese in one place,  some other places decided to incorporate a few various Asian Cuisine, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Thai.  Although our island has a few all in one Asian Places, we have 2, one is on Hylan Blvd at the address 2224 Hylan Blvd, Bay House.

Bay House serves up a great mix of Sushi, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Malaysian Cuisine.  Offering items such as Pad Thai, Thai Basil, Teriyaki Chicken for Lunch.  Sushi Menu includes Stripe Bass Cucumber Roll, Taro Tempura, Oshinko, Salmon, Asparagus, Avacado and other unique Japanese Items.  Some Bay House Signature Dishes include all various type of Asian Cuisine such as China Crispy Dried Beef which is flank steak, Vietnamese Grill Pork Chop, Beijing Style Beef, Turmeric Chicken, Thai Red Snapper, Twin Soft Shel Crab, Steam Flounder Fillet, Mongolian Steak Cube, Saigon Jumbo Shrimp, Shredded Roast Duck.  Appetizers, Various Noodle Soups like the Chicken Udon, Roast Duck Noodle, Tom Yum Kung are a rare find on standardized Chinese Menus.  Appetizers like the Tom Kha Kai which is Thai Style Chicken soup cooked in coconut milk, mushrooms, lime and galangal.  Salads feature items such as crispy smoke salmon skin salad, crab rangoon and roti canai is on the appetizer.
Bay House is one of the more unique Asian Cuisines on Staten Island, with a twist of all in one, but they do it good.  They now even serve Live Lobster on the Menu for only $9.99, it’s a great find, the lobster is also cooked authentic.

Some various forms of the Japanese & Chinese cuisine started included deals, people love Sushi, especially us and restaurants like the Red Apple on Hylan Blvd, which is well established restaurant that was (to our knowledge) the first to introduce the term ‘All You Can Eat Sushi Buffet’, for a single price $15.95, a patron gets to sit and enjoy a huge variety of sushi without worrying of not being able to try them all.  Sushi is actually supposed to be a term used for a single piece, but it is now converted to rolls and served with 6 pieces per roll.

Of course Staten Island is filled up with many good, great, delicious and some not-so-great Chinese Restaurants here.  Maybe someday in the future we’ll go in and look at other ones.

If you are looking for it, here is a list of all Chinese Restaurants on Staten Island, so you can now go through and find the one’s you like, and make sure if you are dining out to remember to take some photos and share them on the site :) , also write your review.
