Rick’s Cafe

By In -Featured, Grand Openings, Staten Island

Our friends at Freshtarian move next door while opening up room for a Rick’s Cafe, which brings the chef back from Aesop’s Tables (Who doesn’t remember that?), even putting Aesop’s Classic on the menu of Rick’s Cafe, the Meatload with Wild Boar Suausage, Chipotle Ketchup and Dirty Mashed Potatoes.

From the owners own “Rick’s Café was inspired by the famous character Richard (Rick) Blaine from the movie classic Casablanca. My goal was to provide a warm and comfortable dining environment with subtle hints of style from the great Swing and Blues era of the 1940s, along with recorded and ‘live’ music reminiscent of that particular time in America. Rick’s Café is a full service restaurant / wine bar located in downtown Staten Island in a pre war building built during the prohibition era. Our Space is similar to what you would find in the Greenwich Village, Chelsea and Park Slope neighborhoods of New York. There is a full service antique mahogany bar, exposed brick walls, a lovely brick fireplace, a cozy dining area supported by dark cherry hardwood floors, and lots of charming windows which easily welcome the natural light from outside. Rick’s seats about 70 guests, and we also have a spacious and airy private patio that can easily accommodate 25 guests. On our patio, you may choose to dine al fresco, enjoy a cigarette or cigar while eating, or just enjoy one of our refreshing cocktails. Private parties of up to 100 guests are welcomed for any type of party you might be considering. Please book early as availability is limited.”

The menu featureing items like the Pork Osso Bucco with Hierloom Bean Ragout and Salsa Verde, Pan Roasted River Cob bler with Razor Clams and Green Chilli and chorizo Brodetto.  Semi Smoked Salmon with Jicama Slaw, Grilled Ribeye Steak. The Lobster Tagliarini which can be had in half or 1 1/4 pound.

Great decor. It all went downhill after walking in, however. Horrible staff. Multiple requests required to get water. Disappointing food, nothing spectacular, especially considering the wait required to get the food. Creme brulee was burnt and cold, and we had to wait 20 minutes for it. Noticed that large parties nearby had an even worse time then my table of two. Don’t waste your money. More importantly, don’t waste your time.

I don’t know what planet “fatty magoo” lives on but it’s certainly not Earth! I have eaten at Rick’s cafe several times since it’s opening and all I can say is that the food is like no other restaurant on Staten Island or in Brooklyn. Music is fantastic,( big band 1940s music) and ‘live music on certain nights, appetizers are to die for,( tuna tartare and honey eggplant parfait especially) salads are crisp and original, entrees are overly filling, very reasonably priced and delicious. Desserts are house made and decadent. Actaully had a bacon and chocolate bread pudding last night that was AMAAAzing. Had the maple cheese cake last week and it was still warm! Owner and chef are more than polite and accommodating and the staff is smiley and friendly. With each time I have been there the dining room has been more and more filled up. Excellent addition to Staten Island, but not for the inexperienced fast food/diner crowd.. 🙂
